What are the best fabric choices for bridesmaid dresses in hot weather?

Lux chiffon is the strongest choice for hot weather — it's lightweight, breathable, moves beautifully in outdoor settings, and makes up the majority of Dessy's warm-weather catalog.

Why lux chiffon works

Lux chiffon has a fine, semi-sheer weave that allows airflow while still reading as elegant. It drapes softly without clinging, which matters when temperatures rise and bridesmaids are standing, dancing, and moving all day. The fabric also photographs well outdoors — the movement shows up in photos in a way that stiffer fabrics don't. It's available across a wide range of Dessy colors, from pale Ballet Pink and Blush to Mint Green and beyond.

Other breathable options

Chiffon knit has the same airy quality as lux chiffon but with a slight stretch — more forgiving in fit, equally comfortable in heat. Neu tulle is the most airy option in the catalog, but it has more structure and can scratch bare skin after hours of wear, which is worth knowing for outdoor summer events. Stretch charmeuse is lightweight but clings — it works in shade and for shorter events, but can feel uncomfortable in direct sun for long periods.

Fabrics to avoid in heat

Velvet, satin twill, and organza jacquard are all poor choices for summer outdoor weddings. They're structured and non-breathable — the kind of fabrics that look dramatic in candlelight but become uncomfortable by the ceremony's end in July heat.

Length matters too

Fabric isn't the only variable. A cocktail or midi length in lux chiffon will be far more comfortable than a floor-length gown in the same fabric. If the wedding is outdoors in summer, shorter hemlines are practical — less fabric collecting heat and catching on grass.
